Beer production plummeted, and in the years after reunification breweries in the former GDR closed down and were deserted quicker than parties when the fridge runs dry. They simply couldnt compete with trendy beers available from the West everyone wanted to drink because they could. While they were buying western beers, western breweries were snapping up their counterparts in the East because they could. Today victims of the Great East German Beertrayal are scattered around Berlin, idle and neglected. A hangover from a country which doesnt want to remember the party, a country which doesnt even exist anymore, they hulk over vast yards, immense halls empty, loading bays silent, vats as dry as fridges at abandoned parties. We hopped into the Brenquell Brauerei through a side window just in front of the main entrance. It was a low window, and someone had conveniently left a beer crate underneath as a step. Carefully, we picked our way through the broken glass and debris. We were in Pausing briefly in the silence to go through the outbuildings full of crap and shite old paint cans, mattresses, crappy furniture, fruit boxes, none of it beer related, we soon found ourselves outside the main building of interest the Maschinenhaus The door was ajar so we invited ourselves in. Up the steps and soon we were staring down at where the giant beer vats had been. This was more like itMetal stairways, platforms overlooking great spaces where once inebriating substances were concocted, wires on tiled walls, ladders, steps, weird looking rusty pipes going anywhere and everywhere. A busy place once, inanimate and soundless now, there was nothing here but clues to feed our curiosity. Well, my curiosity at least. My companion had brought a book and she pulled it out and sat down to read while I continued sniffing around every corner, poking every dark hole and scampering up every stairs I could find. Twenty minutes later she was still there, sitting on a metal platform with just a beer crate for company surrounded by graffiti in a tiled loading bay. The next building had even more clues. Paperwork, files and training manuals behind a dusty door, GDR stuff, manifestos and propaganda, labels scattered around, dusty beer bottles in a crate, then behind a door up the stairs a kitchenDesks with drawers pulled out and papers scattered, strange machines and contraptions, broken windows onto an outside world below us, a world which had left this one behind. As reported in the comments, someone has taken a lot of trouble to seal the site and make sure nobody gets in. The front gate is topped with rolls of nasty sharp razor wire and theres more razor wire in bundles behind the fence. The handy window in the sidewall the previous way of getting in is all blocked up so thats out too. See below for the latest way in. There was no security on the site today Sunday though it seems from the comments that there is usually security there, and maybe even a dog. Be careful if you want to go exploring. And dont try climb over the razor wire. Please, dont even think about it. So the Brenquell Brauereis days arent quite numbered yet, though it does seem they are drawing to a close. It was owned by Mannheim based property concern Actris AG but was sold on last March after Bauhaus pulled out of plans to open one of its ubiquitous DIY stores here. Now it belongs to the Krieger Gruppe, which owns the furniture stores Hffner und Kraft, and which has plans to turn the Brenquell Brauerei into another fucking furniture shop. Kurt Krieger is the businessman who wants to build the huge development in Pankow, where the neglected Gterbahnhof languishes in fear of the new plans. The Krieger Gruppe already owns Brenquell Brauereis neighboring site, where the VEB Berliner Metallhtten und Halbzeugwerke BMHW was. That has already been all torn down to make way for you guessed it a giant fucking furniture store. Berlin cant get enough of them. UPDATE Tuesday, April 1. Its a bit more difficult now but still possibleTake the freshly laid road to the right of the brewery where the VEB Berliner Metallhtten und Halbzeugwerke BMHW used to be, head down toward the river and there, near the water, youll find a metal fenced area where the razor wire has been mostly removed and someone has conveniently left a cushion so you can swing over in relative comfort. Youll need to climb the fence but its not too hard its not too easy either, youll need to be careful.
